The Association was formed in 1999 by a patient, Elisabeth Boulot, and a medic specialising in Trigeminal Neuralgia, Prof Joanna Zakrzewska, to offer support and encouragement to sufferers and became a registered charity in 2002. TNA UK receives no Government or substantial corporate funding and is entirely dependent on membership fees and donations. All the officers of the Association give their time voluntarily and TNA UK now has a membership base of 1,240 patients, and receives enquiries from dozens of sufferers each week.

The Trigeminal Neuralgia Association UK exists to provide support and encouragement and a forum for patients and their supporters. Its aims are to collate and share information and research material about TN and its treatment options, and to promote awareness and understanding of TN amongst the general public and healthcare professionals.

It is hoped that PAE and the European Public Affairs colleagues will seek to raise awareness of pain patients, particularly those with rarer, lesser-known conditions, and promote the activities of all organizations that support chronic pain patients throughout Europe in order to improve faster diagnosis, correct treatment pathways and effective pain management. In order to achieve this, we trust PAE will not only provide support to those in pain by addressing the fundamental causes but, as importantly, help sufferers to manage and ameliorate pain where possible, by promoting better pain pathways and pain management. We hope the Alliance will signpost people to TNA UK and the other appropriate charities, seek to identify and promote the appropriate centres of expertise and provide diagnostic tools for healthcare professionals where these do not already exist.

Trigeminal Neuralgia Association UK

Adrian Hale, Chairman of Trigeminal Neuralgia Association UK, brings from London the news of an interesting study day for the patients suffering from trigeminal neuralgia, whose experiences with pain are to be heard by healthcare professionals during one Study Day on June 3rd, 2017 at The Holiday Inn, Carburton Street, London W1W 5EE.

This action puts the patients forward through the slogan “nothing about us without us” and gets them actively involved in the process of improvement of the diagnosis and management of trigeminal neuralgia.

Among the objectives of this course:

  • Discuss the complexity of a diagnosis of trigeminal neuralgia;
  • List the imaging techniques that may help improve diagnosis or inform on management;
  • Recognise the differences that arise between what healthcare professionals prescribe and what patients actually do;
  • Identify core outcome measures when evaluating patients with trigeminal neuralgia;
  • Compare the different surgical options for trigeminal neuralgia;
  • List additional support that can be provided for patients and healthcare providers on trigeminal neuralgia.

You can register for this event any time before the 22nd May 2017 by accessing the Professionals Area of the association’s website http://www.tna.org.uk/
