Myeloma Romania

During 23-25 November 2017, Myeloma Euronet Romania organized, within the Regional Conference CONFER 2017 in Iasi, the 6th session for professional capacity building for medical assistants working in hematology and oncology.

The other 5 sessions have been organized in County Hospital Timisoara, Institute for Hygiene Bucharest, Fundeni Hospital Bucharest, Colentina Hospital Bucharest and University Hospital Bucharest.

 

The capacity building session in Iasi was attended by 150 medical nurses from the Municipal Hospital in Iasi, and the newly opened Transplant Unit in Iasi as well as other hospitals in the  Moldova region, Focsani, Botosani, Galati, Vaslui, and Barlad.

Throughout the two days of training, Eric Aerts – University Hospital in Zurich, President of HCMP – Haematology Nurses & Healthcare Professionals Group and past President of European Bone Marrow Transplant  – presented themes of interest for the medical assistants who work in hematology and oncology. The theme about challenges of working as a nurse in a transplant unit enjoyed of great interest, particularly that they have inaugurated a new transplant centre in Iasi.

A separate session was allocated to Pain Management in Rare Cancers.

At the end of the workshop, the participants received a graduation diploma based on which they would be able to get credit points from the Ministry of Health.

The training course for nurses was followed on 25 November by a meeting with multiple myeloma (MM) patients from Iasi and the adjacent districts. During this meeting with patients, the participating medical doctors made presentations about clinical trials – Dr Catalin Danaila, Municipal Hospital in Iasi; treatments for multiple myeloma, including transplant possibilities – Conf., Dr. Angela Dascalescu; and available treatments in Romania, the incidence of the MM in Romania and an overview of the survival rate for MM patients in Romania – Conf Dr,. Horia Bumbea, University Hospital in Bucharest. Eric Aerts made a presentation about the treatments available to treat the side effects in multiple myeloma.
