More than 1.2 million of all unemployed persons felt obstructed in obtaining work due to a long-term illness, disorder or disability. Of the people with an obstruction, the vast majority (955 thousand) feel strongly impeded.

A recent study performed buy the Centraal Bureau Statistiek – the Dutch national statistics institution, shows a worrisome increase in the number of people who are obstructed to work by their health condition.

In 2018 there were almost 4.2 million people aged 15 to 75 in the Netherlands with no paid employment. Some of them belong to the unemployed labor force. They are looking for work and therefore immediately available. However, the majority of the non-working population belongs to the non-employed category (not looking for a job anymore, not wanting to work and/or not available for work). According  to the study, in 2018, three in ten people without work indicated that they were prevented from getting a job due to a long-term illness, disorder or disability.
